Silica Aerogel is a type gel material with dispersed media as gas. It is a nanoporous permanent material, composed of polymer molecules or colloidal particles. The unique structure and characteristics of the material make it an attractive choice for many applications.
Properties, uses and application of silicon aerogels
Due to its special network structure silicon aerogel exhibits exceptional thermal, optical, electric, mechanical, and acoustic properties. The product has wide application potential.
I Transparent insulation
Solar collectors use transparent SO2 Aerogels to insulate the heat. They can also serve as insulation for cryogenic devices such as refrigerators.
Also, silica aerogel is one of the most light materials in the entire world. It can be prepared under supercritical conditions and has a density as low as 3kgm/3 – thus, creating the Guinness global record. Silica aerogel can be prepared at laboratory temperature under atmospheric pressure to achieve a 13.4.3kgm 1/3 density. It makes the ideal space vehicle thermal insulation layer. NASA is using the material for the heat insulation layer on the British Jaguar fighter. As an insulation layer, the “Mars Rover’s” design uses silicon aerogel to resist the extremely low temperature of Mars night below -100°C.
For insulation, additional metal was used in the SO2 aerogel. A framework material was polyimide. An aluminum film with the same name was then covered in porous SO2 aggels to create an insulation layer. You can get 5x the heat insulation value if the film is stackable to 10 layers.
II. Application for Electricity
In solid material, the dielectric constant for silicon aerogel can vary between 1-2 and very low. The very large scale integrated Circuit (UISI) will use it to integrate devices. It’s also expected to be used for the substrate materials in large scale integrated Circuits (UISI). Researches currently investigating low dielectric materials have found that SD2 aerogels work well for ULSI.
3. Acoustic impedance coupling materials
SD2 aerogel produces a longitudinal sound propagation rate at 100m/s. The SD2 aerogel’s acoustic impedance increases with increasing density. Because of this, it makes a great acoustic coupling material. It can be used for decoration of floor materials, and to create acoustic impedance in mechanical devices like transport and ultrasound. Also, it can be used as an acoustic delay and high temperature sound insulation. Therefore transparent aerogels could also be used in insulation windows and solar protection.
IV. Use of mechanical properties
Silicon aerogels can be compressedive, low-tensile or elastic. The aerogels’ mechanical properties can be enhanced by ageing, which will increase their shear and compressive coefficients by up to 23 times. They are therefore able to be used in super dampers for their kinetic energy absorption. You can absorb a lot more energy when vibration compresses. Carbon aerogel and silica aerogel both have low vibration impermeance. They can absorb frozen minerals up to 100 atmospheres at vibration pressure.
