What exactly is molybdenum disilicide

It is a crystal of molybdenum silicide (MoSi2) with a tetragonal arrangement. It’s an intermediate phase that contains the most silicon in the MoSi binary alloy. It’s a Dalton intermetallic compounds with a fixed structure. It’s grayish with metallic luster. It exhibits excellent electrical and thermal conductivity as well as outstanding mechanical properties. It is a good heating element, with a better performance than silicon caride. Early applications included a corrosion-resistant, high-temperature coating protection material for metal substrates. This was used to coat parts of jet engine combustion chambers, gas turbine parts, and missile combustion chambers. Today, molybdenum is used in high-temperature heating elements as well as thermocouple protection tubes.

Molybdenum has disilicide characteristics:

Crystallographic properties The pure molybdenum-dilicide is stable thermally and does not experience any phase change prior to reaching its melting point. Changes in crystallographic properties will not affect the temperature rise or fall within the limits of the effective temperature range.

You can find the following thermodynamic properties in your home: high melt point of up to 2030°C and thermal conductivity similar to SiO. These properties are essential for producing high-temperature heating elements and thermocouple protector tubes. They also help increase thermal shock resistance.

The material has excellent electromagnetic characteristics, including low resistivity (2×10-5O*cm), high electricity rate, and good conductivity. This material is excellent for making heating elements, thermocouple temperature thermoelectrodes, and temperature protection tubes. Please pay close attention to insulation when it’s used as thermocouple protective tubes.

Mechanical properties. The tensile strengths and bending strength of some general metal materials are the same as those of certain oxide materials (such Al2O3). Hardness and compressive power are also higher than those of metals. It has poor impact toughness which is a disadvantage to metals. To make cermet, some metal bonds are added to the material during the manufacturing process. However, this is only for the purpose of protecting the product’s high-temperature resistance against oxidation.

Chemical properties It can be dissolved in all acids and alkalis, even at room temperature. MoSi2, except for oxide ceramics is the most stable refractory compound. The molybdenum’s solubility in silicon is approximately 1% (1800degC), which determines MoSi2 oxidation stability temperatures below 1700degC.

Molybdenum disilicide by itself is not highly resistant to high-temperature oxygenation. But at 13001600degC, an extremely thin, dense, and glassy silicon dioxide protective layer forms on its surface. It is designed to prevent further oxidation. MoSi2 not only is stable in oxidizing mediums, but can also be used at high temperatures for reducing, neutral and inert atmospheres. In N2, CO2, SO2 or other media, 1600 degrees can be achieved.

Mollybdenum Disilicide is used:

The most popular silicide with the greatest industrial production at present is molybdenum, which has its main products being high-temperature heat elements and thermocouple protective tubes.
