Button Hole Stitches
Whether you need a simple button hole or a large one, there are several stitches that can be used to create them. To make a simple buttonhole, start with the non-buttonhole side of the yarn and work a yarn-over. Then, knit a decrease to keep the stitch count the same on both sides of the fabric.
To make a larger button hole, work the same procedure on both ends of the fabric, but instead of working the decrease on the non-buttonhole side of the fabric, work it on the button band. You can work a k2tog decrease on either side of the fabric if you prefer.
