Boron-nitride ceramic consists of both boron (or nitrogen) and is thermally and chemically resistant. Three forms of Boron Nitride are commonly found: hexagonalboron nutride (hBBN) ; cubicboronnitride (c-BN), ; and WUrtziteboronnitride (w-BN). H-BN, which is both stable and soft, is used to lubricate cosmetics and as an additive. Polymorphism can also occur in other forms, like aBN, T-BN or rBN.
Hexagonalboron nitride
Hexagonal, boron nitride can be synthesized at high temperatures by ammonolysis (nitridation) of boron dioxide. Hexagonal (BN) has a similar microstructure as graphite. This material is excellent for lubricating because it has a lamellar microstructure with layered lattice structures. It can withstand sintering and most commonly formed by hot pressing.
Structurally, the h-BN powder is white and greasy. It is very similar in other ways to graphite. HBN crystal structure hexagonal. The BN molecule is partly ionic which decreases its electrical conductivity. Both cBN and hBN demonstrated high chemical and thermochemical stability. C-BN was more stable than the h-BN, and it does not change at higher temperatures like 1000degC or 1400degC. Likewise, c-BN can deteriorate up to 2850 degC when in an inert atmosphere. h-BN thermal conductivity , is therefore very close to graphene. It is one reason h-BN is considered one the most important ceramic materials.
H-BN is easily machined by traditional metal cutting techniques when it’s hot. Other important features include high dielectric strength, excellent volume resistivity, and great chemical inertia.
What’s a h-BN?
BN is used in the production of graphene electronic products. It’s used in the manufacture of dielectrics that will be used to produce nano electronic devices.
It’s used for high-quality and low-permittivity railing materials in two-dimensional rampant vertical tunneling devices.
The thinnest hBN is used to protect against corrosion and oxidation.
H-BN can effectively be used to detect gas. This material can be used to detect gases such as ammonia, ethanol and other compounds.
Cubic bore nitride
C-BN is the 2nd most well-known hard material, behind diamond. C-BN is hexagonal BN that has been subjected to high pressure and elevated temperatures. Although the hBN material is very similar to granite, the cBN (another alotrope of carbon), behaves in a similar way. Cubic boron-nitride has the same characteristics as diamond. There has been a significant increase in C-BN commercial production over the past several decades.
C-BN’s hardness is higher than that of traditional materials, such as SiC or Al2O3. C-BN’s grinding wheels produce a higher output result than those made with traditional abrasive tools.
What’s a c-BN?
C-BN is used for cutting tools.
Cubic Boron Nitride can be used to insulate electronic devices. C-BN can be described as a III-V semiconductor material. This compound is excellent as an insulator because it has a large band gap.
C-BN is well-known for its wear resistance, inertia and ability to react with reactive chemicals.
C-BN has been used in the development of protective coatings, due to its excellent hardness as well as wear resistance.
Because of its chemical inertia, boron-nitride is often suitable for use as a protective liner to thermocouple jackets. Crucibles can also be used.
