Choosing a Copper Crucible

A copper crucible is a type of vessel used for melting and casting metal. They are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. They are used in fuel-fired furnaces, electric resistance furnaces, induction furnaces and for transferring molten metal between furnaces. They come with or without pouring spouts and are made from a range of traditional and specialized materials.

Choosing the right crucible is important to your operation. It must be able to withstand the minimum and maximum temperature limits for your metals and alloys, as well as accommodate the rate of thermal change your process will experience. The properties of a crucible that best meet your needs can be a trade-off between the minimum and maximum temperatures, thermal conductivity, and thermal shock resistance.

Crucibles can be used in various manufacturing processes ranging from ceramics and glass to metal casting, including aluminum, steel, and copper. A crucible supplier can help you select a material that will work best in your application.

The lining of a crucible is extremely critical to the performance of a crucible. The lining must be free from oxygen to avoid oxidation and corrosion. The liner can also help reduce heat transfer between the crucible and furnace. Liners are available in a wide variety of materials, from the more common silicon carbide, to graphite and coated graphite.

The use of a crucible with a liner will significantly extend the crucible’s life. Always handle liners with gloves, tongs or finger cots.
