iridium metal powder is used in making crucibles and spark plugs. It has excellent corrosion and heat resistance. It is a rare and dense platinum group metal.

Iridium has a relatively high abundance in the Earth’s crust. It is also found in meteorites that have fallen to Earth. During the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago, many of the metals in the crust were lost, including iridium.

Properties of iridium: Iridium is silver-white and very hard. It is resistant to corrosion by molten salts and acidic substances. It has a low ductility, which makes it difficult to work.

Uses of iridium: It is used in making autocatalysts, dimensionally stable anodes, high temperature crucibles, and dental and jewellery alloys. It is also used in making heavy-duty electrical contacts.

Hazards Arising from the Material: May emit toxic iridium oxide fumes under fire conditions. The substance is incompatible with certain molten salts, such as sodium chloride and sodium cyanide.

Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for Firefighters: Wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing when necessary to avoid inhaling dust or fumes.

Personal Precautions: Wash hands and body parts thoroughly after handling the material. The substance may cause irritation to the eyes and skin.
